Yesterday, the Alberta Cancer Foundation announced that 2280 cyclists raised 8.6 million dollars in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.
Today between 11 am and 6 pm riders are expected to cross the finish line at Spruce Meadows, Lot 2, 18011 Spruce Meadows Way SW, Calgary, after riding more than 200 kms of a journey that began in Calgary, Alberta.
Riders set out early yesterday morning after opening ceremonies at Spruce Meadows. Hours later, they arrived at a “Tent City” erected at Chain Links Provincial Park. Early this morning, the procession of riders continued on the last 100 kilometres to the finish line.
Hundreds of volunteers and crew members were on hand to provide support over the course of the two-day event including meals, water and snack stops, gear transport, portable restrooms, safety on the roads, and comprehensive medical services.
Nick Locke, the Chief Development Officer of the Alberta Cancer Foundation said: “I am grateful to Albertans for making this event such an enormous success. Because of the riders and the support from their family and friends, the Alberta Cancer Foundation is able to invest in cancer research here at home, at the Cross Cancer Institute and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. As a result, patients right here in Alberta will be among the first to benefit as we generate knowledge to contribute to the global cancer-free movement. It is not too early to sign up for next year. Register today by visiting www.conquercancer.ca.”
“As a cancer survivor, a cancer researcher and an athlete, I have so many reasons to ride—to celebrate survivors, honour those we have lost, raise money and resolve to make a difference for the future. The Ride is an incredible experience. It’s addictive. It’s difficult not to sign up for next year.” said Nigel Brockton, a researcher at the Tom Baker Centre in Calgary and one of 2280 riders.
The fourth annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation is already planned for June 23 to 24, 2012. For more information about the event, or to register as a participant for next year, please contact 888.624.BIKE, or sign up online at www.conquercancer.ca
